If you’re trying to increase your social media presence, you already know how important it is to distribute your content at the ideal times.
The difficult part involves determining those ideal times, which can be different for each of your followers.
The simplest (and least effective) technique would be to use general research data on Twitter usage overall. This means you’d be looking at when the “average” Twitter user is most active, without placing any special emphasis on your followers or even people tied to your interests.
- The beginning of the work day in the West coast of North America (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver, etc)
- Lunchtime (12:00 pm EST) on the East coast (New York, Philadelphia, Boston, etc.)
- The end of the work day in London (5:00 pm GMT)
- Still before bedtime for many in India (10:30 PM IST)
Getting a little more accurate would involve looking at usage statistics for users narrowed by categories. For instance, you might find that an average Twitter user who tweets about social media topics is active at completely different times than an average user who tweets about education topics.
If all of it sounds like a complicated method for finding the answer to a simple question, then don’t be discouraged. There are tools that can do most of the heavy lifting for you.
Something that I recently started using is a free social dashboard called SocialBro. After installing the program and linking your Twitter account, SocialBro will analyze your followers and determine the ideal times you should be tweeting.
They’ll give you graphics and a whole slew of charts which go much further than when you should tweet. SocialBro will show you what your followers talk about, which topics resonate the most with them and what types of links they share.
Here are some screenshots from a recent analysis we ran:
I haven’t seen a free analysis program with as many features as SocialBro in a long time, so it should definitely be part of your social media game plan. If you do decide to give it a try, let us know about the experience!
